Gender Group Accuses LPGA of Discrimination

Pittsburgh, PA, December 9, 2002 — “Not since the 1940Â’s has the sports industry seen such exclusionary and discriminative policies in a major organization. The policies of the LPGA are codified discrimination against men,” claims Ben Faulds, chair of an organization dedicated to gender equity.

When asked about the LPGA’s discrimination, Faulds said, “I’m deeply saddened by the deaf ear that is turned to the LPGA’s blatant discrimination because it is against men. This demonstrates the double standard that exists when it comes to political correctness. These policies put the sport of golf in a bad light and diminish the accomplishments of the LPGA players because so many people are excluded from the competitions.”

Faulds is the chair of the Council of Hypocritical Organizations Opposed to Tradition in Every Sector (HOOTiES) which is an unregistered organization long dedicated to ending gender and age bias.

HOOTiES has sent correspondence to the LPGA urging the organization to voluntarily change its policies that discriminate. If the LPGA refuses to comply, HOOTiES plans to use pressure from the media and corporate sponsors to force the LPGA to change its discriminatory policies. In addition, HOOTiES plans to contact LPGA stars, such as Annika Sorenstam, Nancy Lopez, Keri Webb, and Laura Davies, and encourage them to sit out of the tournaments until this matter is resolved. “These golfers command media attention and drive the quality of the LPGA’s product, which makes their influence on the LPGA policy-makers undeniable,” said Faulds.

Commenting on the Augusta National controversy, Faulds said, “I completely agree with the stance of Dr. Martha Burk and the National Council of Women’s Organizations. Hopefully from here HOOTiES can take over the leadership position in the debate, and free up some of Dr. Burk’s time and resources so that she may return to her true life’s work…saving people’s lives.” When told that Martha Burk doesn’t save lives, Faulds responded, “I thought you said she was a doctor?”

HOOTiES was founded in the early 1980’s in attempt to eliminate gender discrimination in public restrooms. “Having separate restrooms based on gender demonstrates the wedge that has been driven between men and women in this country.” Although the campaign was largely unsuccessful, HOOTiES did manage to have urinals installed in the ladies’ rooms at several major locations. “It is not fair that we expect women to use restrooms that are equipped inferiorly to men’s rooms.”

According to Faulds, one of HOOTiES more successful campaigns resulted in the shift of manufacturing operations of several well known shoe manufacturers and Kathie Lee Gifford’s clothing lines from American plants to foreign plants that use inexpensive child labor. “Kids need jobs, too. In today’s world we should no longer discriminate against companies strictly upon the age of their employees. The job should go to the lowest bidder…period,” Faulds touted.
