Dr. Leeds recommends a combination of “rules and tools” to keep youngsters safe online: straightforward, age-appropriate rules that children agree to as a condition of their usage of electronic devices; and tools that enable parents to control and monitor their activity. “The first and most important rule is for parents themselves,” says Dr. Leeds. “They must get involved and stay involved with their children’s online activity, going online with their young children, teaching them appropriate behavior and, most important, keeping the lines of communication open as the children get older and more technologically sophisticated. Rules for children must be part of the family contract.”



Rules for Online Safety


Never post identifying information (phone numbers, address, school, age), revealing photos or videos, or sexual messages; never reveal passwords to anyone.

Never send pictures or identifying information to strangers.

Never open e-mail from an unknown address; never download content from an unknown source.

Never agree to meet in person someone met online.

Never respond to messages that are in any way threatening, frightening or inappropriate.

Never post, send or forward messages that are rude, unkind or damaging to someone else.

Immediately tell an adult if any online content or communication makes you uncomfortable.


“Discuss and adapt these rules as needed to strike the appropriate balance between privacy and protection,” says Dr. Leeds. “With younger children, exercise more control and supervision of their activities, the materials they upload and receive and who they interact with. As you become more comfortable with their maturity and their level of understanding of what constitutes risky behavior, modify your supervision accordingly.”



Tools for Online Safety


Take advantage of parental controls provided by your Internet service provider. These may include filters to block unsafe sites and chat rooms and prevent personal information from being sent as well as software that monitors and tracks online activity and enables time-management controls.

Take advantage of parental controls and safeguards on your child’s phone, such as tracking location and turning off or blocking texting and picture features. (Consider whether your child is mature enough to use a smart phone responsibly or whether a less sophisticated phone used primarily for security purposes would be more appropriate.)

Disable cookies in the browser to restrict commercial tracking of a child’s online activity.

Ensure that you or your children set appropriate privacy controls on all social media sites they frequent and use screen names on gaming and other sites to protect their identity. But, as Dr. Leeds emphasizes, technology is no substitute for a parent’s active involvement. “The most effective protection for children online is a parent’s active and ongoing attentiveness – teaching them to use technology responsibly, taking an interest in their activity, making sure they understand the risks. Womens Reproductive Conditions and Depression

Women are twice as likely to experience bouts of major depression and dysthymia (chronic depression) as men. There are no certain reasons for this difference in depression rates between men and women, but research does show that women have certain medical conditions that are specific to them that may contribute to their higher rate of depression.


A woman’s monthly reproductive cycle and its symptoms brought about by hormonal changes along with other disorders of the reproductive organs can lead to depression and its symptoms.


The monthly menstrual cycle brings physical and behavioral changes to many women that are related to the fluctuation of the many hormones that regulate the reproductive cycle. Called premenstrual syndrome (PMS), for many women these hormonal changes can bring about wide mood swings including depression and irritability. While medical researchers are not completely sure of the cause of PMS they are studying the way the cyclical change in a woman’s hormones affects the brains chemistry. It is believed that these hormonal changes are responsible for many of the depressive symptoms women experience.


Endometriosis is a disease specific to women that if left untreated can lead to depression. Endometriosis strikes 10% to 20% of American women during their child bearing years and occurs when the endometrial tissue that is usually found in the uterus grows outside the uterus on the internal organs in the abdomen. Endometriosis includes a whole list of symptoms including pelvic tenderness and pain, chronic fatigue, heavy periods, infertility, digestive tract problems and pain, and miscarriages.


Women with endometriosis are highly susceptible to depression because of the constant pain and discomfort this disease brings. Finding a treatment that works can be time consuming and frustrating and many times the treatment itself can cause depression.


Menopause is another uniquely female condition that can lead to depression. As women approach midlife the signs of menopause begin to appear. Women going through menopause begin to feel that they are loosing control of their bodies and their life which can be a precursor to depression.

For some women this change in hormones along with the responsibility of a new baby can be difficult to deal with.

Research has shown that those women most susceptible to depression from these reproductive centered conditions have had episodes of depression previously and are more likely to suffer from depression than women who do not have a past history of depression. Lowest earners three time more likely to suffer from poor sleep

A new survey, commissioned by the charity Homeless Link, has revealed that the chance of getting a good night’s sleep is directly related to the size of your income. In the poll of 2,000 UK adults, more than three times as many people on the lowest incomes have trouble sleeping as those with the highest salaries.



Security of housing also has a part to play, with those renting more likely to report sleeping badly than homeowners.



The survey illustrates the significant impact that lack of sleep has on people’s wellbeing. 81% of respondents felt that lack of sleep seriously impacted their overall health, wellbeing and happiness. 58% reported relationships with family and friends being affected and almost half (48%) said their productivity at work had been affected.



Commissioned by the StreetLink rough sleeping service, the poll coincides with the launch of a campaign to help connect the estimated 2,400 people who sleep rough every night in England with support.



Evidence suggests that prolonged rough sleeping is bad for your health, with 8 in 10 of those who have slept on the streets reporting physical and mental health issues.



In the poll, stress (50%), noise (28%) and temperature (25%) were the top reasons for trouble sleeping, but financial stability is again a factor. 36% of those with the lowest incomes cite financial worries as the main reason for trouble sleeping, compared to 16% of the highest earners.



The #SleepWell campaign urges the public to contact StreetLink whenever they see someone sleeping rough this winter. StreetLink is an England-wide phone-line, website and mobile app which enables the public to alert local services if they are concerned about someone sleeping rough and help connect them with support.



Run by the charities Homeless Link and St. Mungo’s Broadway and funded by Government, StreetLink has connected 8,669 individuals to local services since it was launched in December 2012.



Commenting on the findings, Rick Henderson, Chief Executive of Homeless Link, said: “We all know what it feels like to not get a good night’s sleep, and the barriers highlighted by this poll are faced by those on the streets every single night. This winter, as temperatures drop and the weather turns, we urge people to consider how well they would sleep if they were on the streets. Many people sleeping rough are unaware that local help may be available to them. By contacting StreetLink you can help make that connection and ensure they receive the support they need to leave homelessness behind.”
